WEBVTT 00:00.270 --> 00:03.890 My name is Ian Nado . I'm originally 00:03.900 --> 00:07.460 born and brought up in Nigeria . I'm 29 00:07.469 --> 00:09.970 years old . Hey , I'm ma star and Brian 00:09.979 --> 00:12.201 Hoover from the 1 71st Air feeling wing 00:12.201 --> 00:14.368 public affairs . I'm sitting here with 00:14.368 --> 00:16.479 a fan and he's gonna tell me a little 00:16.479 --> 00:16.090 bit about why he decided to join the 00:16.100 --> 00:18.322 Air Force , how he came to the National 00:18.322 --> 00:20.322 Guard and how he made his trek from 00:20.322 --> 00:22.211 Nigeria here to Pittsburgh . Hi , 00:22.211 --> 00:25.040 everyone . Uh , so how did you get from 00:25.049 --> 00:28.040 Nigeria to Pittsburgh ? So I first 00:28.049 --> 00:30.479 moved to the United States to , for 00:30.489 --> 00:32.600 educational purposes . I moved , um , 00:32.600 --> 00:36.000 to get my masters in criminology at 00:36.009 --> 00:38.065 Indiana University of Pennsylvania , 00:38.065 --> 00:40.849 which is Indiana P A . And after that , 00:40.860 --> 00:43.027 um , I moved to Pittsburgh , um , when 00:43.027 --> 00:45.159 I got a job . Yeah . And since then 00:45.169 --> 00:48.139 I've been in Pittsburgh . So , how did 00:48.150 --> 00:50.372 you find out about the Air Force ? Um , 00:50.372 --> 00:52.594 the , the Reserves , the Guard active . 00:52.594 --> 00:54.928 How did , how did you find out about it ? 00:54.928 --> 00:57.810 So , I've always of the passion and to 00:57.819 --> 01:00.599 work with law enforcement military . So 01:00.610 --> 01:04.550 after , um , my degree , I started 01:04.559 --> 01:06.615 looking into joining the military at 01:06.615 --> 01:08.892 the point , I was thinking of the army . 01:08.892 --> 01:10.837 Then when I had like , um , deeper 01:10.837 --> 01:14.559 research , I , um , saw the Air 01:14.569 --> 01:17.690 Force opportunity and , um , when I , I 01:17.699 --> 01:20.529 had a friend of mine on this base that , 01:20.790 --> 01:23.012 um , that has been in the Air Force for 01:23.012 --> 01:25.123 like four years . So I reached out to 01:25.123 --> 01:27.550 him . Uh , is this , um , a good , um , 01:27.559 --> 01:29.615 place to be ? And , you know , you , 01:29.615 --> 01:31.837 you said a lot of nice things about the 01:31.837 --> 01:33.615 Air Force which , um , I did my 01:33.615 --> 01:35.837 research to and they all , they are all 01:35.837 --> 01:38.089 correct . So I , I saw , I , I checked 01:38.099 --> 01:40.266 the air Force website , reached out to 01:40.266 --> 01:42.321 the recruiter on base and we started 01:42.321 --> 01:45.940 from there . So in the midst of that 01:45.949 --> 01:49.339 research , what was the edge that the 01:49.349 --> 01:51.750 Air Force had , that other services 01:51.760 --> 01:53.982 didn't have ? Like , what , what tipped 01:53.982 --> 01:56.230 that needle . So I , first of all 01:56.239 --> 01:58.350 discovered about the , you know , the 01:58.350 --> 02:00.461 basic training which um I think the , 02:00.461 --> 02:02.517 with the , I made like 10 weeks with 02:02.517 --> 02:04.572 the Air Force is like 7.5 that , you 02:04.572 --> 02:06.795 know , give me and the , you know , the 02:06.795 --> 02:09.070 structure of the training to and also 02:09.080 --> 02:12.009 the careers when they call like the Air 02:12.020 --> 02:15.699 force carers . Um And also there 02:15.710 --> 02:18.940 was um a , a bonus 02:19.419 --> 02:21.919 that , that was attached to some of the , 02:21.929 --> 02:24.096 you know , jobs which , you know , got 02:24.096 --> 02:27.940 my attention too . So III I decided to , 02:27.949 --> 02:31.679 you know , go for it . Sure . So what 02:31.690 --> 02:33.912 is your job in the Air Force ? And um , 02:33.912 --> 02:36.023 and why did you choose that job ? Was 02:36.023 --> 02:38.246 it bonus driven ? So , right now I work 02:38.246 --> 02:40.759 with the air transportation and it was 02:40.770 --> 02:42.770 bonus driven . It was , there , was 02:42.770 --> 02:45.429 there a $50,000 enlistment bonus 02:45.440 --> 02:47.869 attached to it which , you know , got 02:47.880 --> 02:51.369 me really attached . Yeah . 02:52.559 --> 02:54.726 If you take the bonus out of the , the 02:54.726 --> 02:57.500 equation , what job did you want first 02:57.509 --> 03:01.220 before you saw the bonus ? So , I was 03:01.229 --> 03:04.070 looking for either security 03:04.080 --> 03:07.779 services or um it related 03:07.789 --> 03:11.410 cybersecurity careers . Yes . Um But 03:11.419 --> 03:13.475 those ones , I don't think they have 03:13.475 --> 03:16.669 bonuses and they have like more time in 03:16.679 --> 03:18.846 technical school too . That was one of 03:18.846 --> 03:21.080 my consideration . But the air 03:21.089 --> 03:24.270 transportation as 50 K sign on bonus 03:24.440 --> 03:27.559 and also the duration in technical 03:27.570 --> 03:30.270 school is quite shorter . So those are 03:30.279 --> 03:32.539 the motivating factors that pushed me 03:32.550 --> 03:36.500 towards that . How long do you think 03:36.509 --> 03:38.509 you could see yourself being in the 03:38.509 --> 03:40.620 military ? Are you a a one and done ? 03:40.620 --> 03:42.898 You know , one enlistment kind of join ? 03:42.898 --> 03:46.199 Um Do you , um do you wanna just get 03:46.210 --> 03:48.432 your training and move on ? Do you , is 03:48.432 --> 03:50.654 there somebody that you're like , hey , 03:50.654 --> 03:50.529 I could do , I could , this could be a 03:50.539 --> 03:52.650 lifetime career . I'm looking to make 03:52.650 --> 03:54.317 certain rank , I'm looking to 03:54.317 --> 03:56.428 commission . Um What , what , what do 03:56.428 --> 03:59.380 you think your timeline is today ? So 03:59.389 --> 04:03.050 with my , my plan for my career , I be , 04:03.059 --> 04:06.919 I think um there's 90% chances 04:06.929 --> 04:10.820 of mere listing like um making my 04:10.830 --> 04:13.649 contract longer and um 04:15.059 --> 04:17.369 and I've always loved military . So I 04:17.380 --> 04:19.839 think I might spend a lot of years in 04:19.850 --> 04:22.459 this career . I have no plan of , you 04:22.470 --> 04:25.029 know , going to living anytime soon . 04:25.820 --> 04:29.279 So , let me ask you a hypothetical if 04:29.510 --> 04:31.510 your contract's up and it's time to 04:31.510 --> 04:34.420 reenlist . There's no bonus in Air 04:34.429 --> 04:37.500 Trans , but there's a bonus in one of 04:37.510 --> 04:39.566 the other career fields you wanted . 04:39.566 --> 04:42.540 Like security forces or cyber . Would 04:42.549 --> 04:45.549 you change ? Go to that career field 04:45.640 --> 04:49.519 and take the bonus ? Y I would . 04:49.690 --> 04:52.730 Yes , I would because um , the 04:52.739 --> 04:56.089 cybersecurity is what I do right now . 04:56.609 --> 04:59.380 And um , so if that is an opportunity 04:59.390 --> 05:01.709 for me to , you know , transition into 05:01.720 --> 05:05.170 cybersecurity and get a bonus and still 05:05.179 --> 05:07.401 be doing what , you know , I'm doing in 05:07.401 --> 05:09.750 my civilian job , I guess . Yes , I 05:09.760 --> 05:12.920 would go for it . And then is there 05:12.929 --> 05:15.959 anything that you believe being in the 05:15.970 --> 05:19.279 military is going to , to help you in 05:19.290 --> 05:21.470 your civilian career ? So you said you 05:21.480 --> 05:23.279 talked about being in cyber and 05:23.290 --> 05:25.179 industry . Um , but here you're , 05:25.179 --> 05:27.290 you're air transit . I mean , we , we 05:27.290 --> 05:29.068 can't talk about two so totally 05:29.068 --> 05:31.123 separate career fields . Do you , is 05:31.123 --> 05:33.346 there anything that you think that they 05:33.346 --> 05:35.512 will be able to impact on another ? So 05:35.512 --> 05:37.734 there's this one big thing , you know , 05:37.734 --> 05:40.790 working in the B Air Force gives you , 05:40.799 --> 05:43.410 um , a kind of edge of every other 05:43.420 --> 05:46.279 applicant to any job position . You 05:46.290 --> 05:48.346 know , the discipline is there , the 05:48.346 --> 05:50.459 commitment is there the , the respite 05:50.609 --> 05:53.570 you get from serving the country also , 05:53.579 --> 05:55.709 you know , sometimes , um getting a 05:55.720 --> 05:58.190 security clearance from , from the 05:58.200 --> 06:01.720 government , it gives you edge over um 06:01.929 --> 06:04.630 every other applicant . So I believe um 06:05.440 --> 06:07.662 even been in entrance , you know , it's 06:07.662 --> 06:11.299 a different , um different aspect of 06:11.309 --> 06:13.640 career . But um I'm getting , I believe 06:13.649 --> 06:15.619 I'm gonna get some ideas and some 06:15.630 --> 06:17.686 knowledge from that , which is gonna 06:17.686 --> 06:20.420 help me in my civilian life . And also 06:20.429 --> 06:23.119 I um with the Air Force , there's 06:23.130 --> 06:25.549 opportunity to transition like after 06:25.559 --> 06:27.781 some years , if you want to move into a 06:27.781 --> 06:30.059 different career , there's opportunity . 06:30.059 --> 06:32.420 So I believe um um I'm gonna get a lot 06:32.429 --> 06:34.651 of knowledge that the world my civilian 06:34.651 --> 06:38.100 life . Is there anything that maybe I 06:38.109 --> 06:41.429 didn't ask that you feel helped guide 06:41.440 --> 06:43.551 your decision , whether it be to join 06:43.551 --> 06:45.773 the military , to join the Air Force to 06:45.773 --> 06:47.940 join the Guard . Um With exception of 06:47.950 --> 06:49.839 like what , like I said , what we 06:49.839 --> 06:52.061 talked about , I , I know we joined Air 06:52.061 --> 06:51.880 Trans because a bonus or whatever , is 06:51.890 --> 06:54.380 there any other influential factors 06:54.390 --> 06:57.869 that helped guide your decision to put 06:57.880 --> 07:01.010 you here today ? So because of my 07:01.019 --> 07:03.399 background coming from Nigeria , 07:03.410 --> 07:06.540 there's this um global perspective of 07:06.549 --> 07:08.510 in Nigeria and that um you know , 07:08.519 --> 07:10.880 there's cybercrimes , there's a lot of 07:10.890 --> 07:13.899 crimes . So that was what prompted me 07:13.910 --> 07:16.089 to get my criminology degree . I have 07:16.100 --> 07:18.429 another degree in cybersecurity . I 07:18.440 --> 07:21.700 wanted to , you know , um try to 07:21.709 --> 07:25.309 be uh a , a respect of law 07:25.320 --> 07:27.880 and something to do , you know , to 07:27.890 --> 07:30.899 support the um law and order in the 07:30.910 --> 07:33.132 community and in the country at large . 07:33.132 --> 07:35.459 So those are one of the pushing factors 07:35.470 --> 07:37.809 that motivated my passion that I can 07:37.820 --> 07:40.042 work for the military , you know , help 07:40.042 --> 07:42.489 combat , um help contribute my little 07:42.500 --> 07:45.130 quota towards making the world a better 07:45.140 --> 07:48.260 place . And um I chose the National 07:48.269 --> 07:51.940 Guard because um I have a family and um 07:52.000 --> 07:54.130 I feel um I can be doing this at the 07:54.140 --> 07:56.950 same time being be a family man and to 07:56.959 --> 08:00.160 be doing all this . So those tho those 08:00.170 --> 08:03.230 are the f 11 of the factors too .
