MEDRETE

Over the dates of 16 April 2007 and 30 April 2207, a contingent of 32 personnel from the 171st and 111th Medical Groups deployed to Panama in support of New Horizons 2007. Personnel provided medical care for the villages of Valle Saron, Miramar, and Chiriqui Grande over the listed days. During the humanitarian portion of this medical readiness training exercise (MEDRETE), the two units provided medical care for over 5,800 patients. This included 3,390 medical, 397 dental, and 1,714 optometry patients. Just fewer than 13,000 medications were prescribed along with 1,400 eyeglasses being distributed. Dental was able to extract 270 teeth over the 10 days relieving the local villagers of pain not normally felt by most individuals. In addition to medical care, we assisted the local medical evacuation unit fill a emergency medical technician shortage allowing their only technician some needed time off. Then without being asked Chief Smith of the 111th Medical Group and several 171st medical personnel cooked dinner for all base personnel.
