Commander for a day Joey Fabus
Eight year old Joey Fabus and his family were invited to the 171st Air Refueling Wing located near Pittsburgh Pa. for Joey to be Commander for a day July 17, 2014. Joey has Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, an inoperable tumor that grows in the middle of the brainstem, his condition is terminal. Joey was sworn in as commander of the 171st from the Mission Support Group Commander Colonel Mark Goodwill. He then received his flight suit, hat, and pilot wings. From there, Joey toured the security forces section where he got to see, hands on, the different weapons the 171st uses. Joey was then given an intelligence briefing and given a scenario where he had to make a command decision. He then got a tour of one of the KC-135 R/T Stratotanker aircraft. The day ended when Joey received a medal for his bravery from 171st Maintenance Group Commander Colonel Thomas Hess. Joey’s parents, Cindy and Dave, were awarded a center of influence medal. Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania, Jim Crawly, toured the 171st Air Refueling Wing March 26, 2014. Mr. Crawley's intent was to discuss the impact and importance of the military in Western Pennsylvania. Also attending was Pennsylvania Senator Matt Smith and Representative Harry Readshaw. Mr. Crawley toured the 171st Air Refueling Wing, followed by the Army reserve's 316th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, followed by the Navy's Naval Ocean Systems Center, and finally the Air Force Reserve's 911th Airlift Wing. While at the 911th Mr. Crawley held a press conference to bring attention to the daily activities of the military in western Pa. and how it benefits the local community.
